Searching the Internet Efficiently

In this workshop I describe how to improve your life by finding quality information quickly. I discuss the insights gleaned from my interviews with over100 college students who won the Digital Literacy Contest. During this contest the students competed to answer questions by searching the internet. Questions like,

  • Who was the Director for Staples, Walt Disney, and FedEx?
  • How much did Senator Carl Levin's campaign committee receive from people who worked for lobbyists in the 2008 election cycle?
  • What phone number should I call to order a recycle bin in Gainesville, Florida?

How does someone search the internet more quickly than their peers? I have found surprising techniques you can practice to produce higher quality work more efficiently.

  • Determining an author's affiliations

Testimonials

Sarah Bordac, Brown University Library

"We learned new marketing strategies from Daniel, who also helped us to see new ways to make library events popular to students... Having Daniel there was great. If he wasn't there it wouldn't have been as successful. He engaged the students in a peer-to-peer manner which was great to see. So much of what we do is have adults 30 years their senior telling them what's good for them, which is a hard pill to swallow. Daniel connected with them - both in his marketing and in his delivery."

Ned Quist, Brown University Library

"I think the important thing for me was seeing the enthusiasm among the students... Daniel has the marketing down and knows how to reach his peers... I thought our job was pretty easy. I was very impressed with the level of support that Daniel supplied."

Ronald Fark, Brown University Library

"Excellent turn out for a library event. Students were engaged... It would be great to have this as a fall annual event."

Virginia Vought, Indiana University Libraries

"...we were very happy with the results... Students enjoyed it. Fun for everyone. Promotion of digital literacy and smart searching... Certainly it was deemed a success."

Laura Jordan, University of Florida Libraries

"I really enjoyed the discussion that Daniel led... I think... more of the discussion would be beneficial to the participants."
